Ling Xiao, a celebrated figure in the Singapore music scene, passed away on December 13, 2023, at the age of 75. Known for his contributions to the industry since the 1960s, Ling’s health had significantly declined following a stroke he suffered in 2022, which left him with paralysis on the right side of his body. This deterioration necessitated full-time care and led to his withdrawal from public life.

Declining Health and Final Days

Ling’s real name was Tan Choon Huat. Before his stroke, he had been battling various health issues, including hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. His younger sister, Jeci, shared that Ling had been optimistic during the initial recovery phase, actively participating in traditional Chinese acupuncture treatments. However, she noted his stubbornness in refusing physiotherapy, stating, “At his age, he would have to start all over again like a child… and that it was a waste of time.” Jeci expressed that had he accepted physiotherapy earlier, he might not have passed away so soon.

Over the past three years, Jeci devoted herself to caring for Ling, a role that left her both physically and emotionally drained. Ling’s health fluctuated, leading to multiple hospitalizations. During a recent admission, he experienced severe pain and was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. Doctors assessed that his heart was too weak for chemotherapy, estimating he had only six months to live.

In respect of Ling’s wishes to return home, the family made the difficult choice to discharge him on November 25, 2023. Unfortunately, due to severe inflammation in his knees and overall weakness, they were unable to continue his dialysis treatments. In the final days leading up to his death, Ling could not eat.

A Legacy in Music

Ling Xiao’s career began in 1967 when he secured second place in a singing competition organized by Rediffusion. His charisma and talent propelled him to fame, leading to the release of over 100 Mandarin albums throughout his lifetime. Prior to falling ill, Ling had also been a resident mentor on Mediacorp’s Golden Age Talentime, where he remained a beloved figure, often regarded as an evergreen presence despite his age.

His wake is currently being held at Block 116A Bukit Merah Central, with the funeral scheduled for Wednesday. Ling Xiao’s passing marks the end of an era for many fans who cherished his contributions to the music industry in Singapore.
