Peter Hill Calls for Revitalization of SriLankan Airlines’ Hub Strategy

Former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, Peter Hill, has urged the national carrier to reinvigorate its ambitious strategy of becoming the “hub of the Indian Ocean,” with a renewed focus on expanding into Africa. Speaking at the International Tourism Leaders Summit 2025 held in Colombo, Hill emphasized the necessity for the airline to explore new markets beyond its traditional routes.
Hill proposed a multi-faceted growth plan that would replace potentially costly direct flights with an “island-hopping” model. This approach would connect various African destinations through critical stopovers in the Indian Ocean, allowing SriLankan Airlines to cater to multiple markets while enhancing Colombo’s position as a vital transit hub linking Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Reviving Past Success
Reflecting on his time as CEO, Hill pointed to the airline’s previous successes, particularly in the Indian market, as evidence of what could be achieved. During his tenure, SriLankan Airlines expanded to 100 weekly flights across 10 Indian cities, establishing itself as the largest foreign carrier in that region. “If we could achieve that in India, we can replicate it in other diverse regions,” he stated.
Hill’s vision for the airline includes a strategic shift that would not only bolster SriLankan Airlines but also strengthen Sri Lanka’s aviation, tourism, and overall economic growth. By positioning the airline as a regional connector rather than a point-to-point operator, Hill believes that SriLankan can effectively tap into emerging markets.
A Strategic Opportunity
The potential revival of this network strategy could pave the way for significant advancements in SriLankan Airlines’ operations and its role in the global aviation landscape. By aligning its services with the growing demand for connectivity between Asia, Europe, and Africa, the airline may find new avenues for growth.
The call for a renewed focus on the Indian Ocean hub strategy reflects broader trends in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly seeking to enhance their connectivity and expand their reach. The successful implementation of this plan could position SriLankan Airlines as a pivotal player in the region.
Hill’s insights come at a crucial time for the airline, as it navigates the challenges and opportunities presented by a rapidly evolving travel landscape. The revival of its hub strategy could not only elevate the airline’s stature but also contribute to the economic vitality of Sri Lanka as a whole.
