Rui En Shares Journey Through Depression to Mental Health Advocacy

Singaporean actress Rui En has publicly shared her experiences with depression, detailing a profound struggle that began in 2024. In an interview with the Chinese-language news outlet Lianhe Zaobao, the 44-year-old revealed that her emotional state reached a “low point,” leading her to confront feelings of despair and helplessness for the first time.
Rui En, best known for her role in the series CLIF, described her battle with mental health as a gradual process. “It didn’t become serious overnight; it was gradual,” she explained. The actress noted that during this challenging period, she experienced symptoms including insomnia and a significant loss of appetite. “From the time I realised my mood was low to when I came out of it, it took about six months,” she added.
A Message of Hope and Awareness
Reflecting on her recovery, Rui En expressed gratitude for overcoming her struggles. “My chest was tight all the time, it was painful,” she stated. Understanding the difficulty of such battles, she is now committed to promoting mental health awareness. “I want to let others going through it know they’re not alone,” she emphasized.
In her efforts to raise awareness, Rui En has been engaging with various health professionals and celebrities, including Kit Chan, Taufik Batisah, and Abigail Lee, the founder of the counselling centre Healing Hearts. Through these conversations, she aims to shed light on wellness issues and support those facing similar challenges.
In September, Rui En took her advocacy a step further by partnering with premium Singaporean tea brand Gryphon to launch a special line of mooncakes. A portion of the proceeds from this initiative will benefit an 80-year-old widower who has dedicated his life to caring for his adult daughter with special needs. This venture highlights her commitment to social causes and community support.
Rediscovering Identity Through Reflection
Rui En’s last acting project was the 2023 drama Oppa, Saranghae, after which she took a break from acting. Initially, this hiatus led her to question her identity and purpose. Yet, she has since found solace in the slower pace of life, which has allowed her to explore new avenues. “When I leave this world one day, how will people remember me?” she pondered. “I’ve done many things but it doesn’t feel enough. I want to help others.”
Through her personal journey and newfound mission, Rui En continues to inspire many, emphasizing the importance of mental health and the power of community support. Her story serves as a reminder that vulnerability can lead to strength, and that individuals can emerge from their struggles with a renewed sense of purpose.
