Asteroid ‘Hengchun’ Named to Honor Pingtung’s 150-Year Legacy

A newly discovered asteroid has been officially named “Hengchun” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the township in Pingtung County. The announcement was made by the National Central University (NCU) during a news conference held at the Pingtung County Library. This significant recognition highlights the region’s rich history and cultural contributions.
During the event, NCU Vice President Chen Wen-yih expressed that the naming of the asteroid serves as “a permanent gift to Hengchun, visible to the world.” He emphasized the importance of the township’s heritage and its community. The asteroid, which had been initially designated as 724875, was discovered on August 29, 2008, and received its official naming by the International Astronomical Union this year after over a decade of observation.
As Chen elaborated, he hopes that seeing the asteroid will evoke memories of the stories connected to the land it represents. He believes that the asteroid will also inspire the children of Hengchun to “chase their dreams and explore new frontiers.”
The celebration of the asteroid’s naming is not just a scientific achievement; it is also a cultural milestone for Pingtung County. The county’s Transportation and Tourism Development Division expressed gratitude to NCU for this tribute. They pledged to enhance efforts in promoting astronomical tourism. Initiatives will include tour guide training, certification for “dark sky-friendly” businesses, and large-scale stargazing events aimed at attracting visitors and fostering local interest in astronomy.
The asteroid “Hengchun” marks the third celestial body named after a location in Pingtung County, following the naming of “Pingtung” in 2006 and “Kenting” in 2009. This initiative not only celebrates local heritage but also places Pingtung on the global map of astronomy, connecting the community to the wider universe.
