At the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) 2025, held on October 7, Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) took a leading role, providing medical support and promoting wellness among a record-breaking 42,000 participants. As Malaysia’s premier distance running event, KLSCM proudly holds the World Athletics Elite Label Race status, marking it as a significant milestone in the country’s sporting calendar.

PHKL’s commitment to community health extended beyond traditional medical support. As the official medical partner and a Category Sponsor for the event, the hospital engaged in various pre-race activities aimed at preparing runners physically and mentally. These initiatives included a series of health workshops and a Race-Ready Health Fair, which featured free health screenings and interactive wellness activities for participants and their families.

Promoting Preventive Healthcare

Leading up to the marathon, PHKL hosted the Race-Ready Health Fair at its Kuala Lumpur facility, inviting runners and community members to engage in health screenings, cardio workouts, and race preparation workshops. Notable speakers, including Rainer Biemans, KLSCM Project Director, praised PHKL for its ongoing support in promoting health and fitness.

Specialist talks, led by Dr. Faizal Khan, Consultant Cardiologist, provided participants with critical advice on heart health, injury prevention, and joint care. Runners received complimentary health screenings, which included checks for blood pressure, glucose levels, and body mass index (BMI), ensuring they were well-prepared for the race.

During the race pack collection days, PHKL set up a booth making healthcare more accessible to runners. Participants could book appointments or purchase health packages on-site, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures as part of their training regimen.

Innovative Medical Support During the Marathon

For the second consecutive year, PHKL introduced the Medic-On-The-Run initiative, deploying trained medical professionals to run alongside participants throughout the half and full marathons. Equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and first aid kits, these medical personnel provided immediate assistance when necessary, marking KLSCM 2025 as the first Malaysian race to implement such a life-saving concept.

PHKL mobilized a dedicated Medical Sub-Committee consisting of 498 personnel, including doctors, emergency physicians, nurses, and physiotherapists, ensuring comprehensive medical coverage and emergency preparedness across the race course.

“Our ability to mobilize a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals showcases PHKL’s readiness to support high-volume, world-class sporting events like KLSCM,” stated Erica Lam, Chief Executive Officer of Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur. “This reflects the depth of our expertise and commitment to public safety on race day.”

This year also marked a significant leap for PHKL as it stepped up to become a Gold Sponsor for the Pantai KL 10KM, while continuing its role as the official medical provider for the marathon. Lam emphasized that the hospital’s mission extends beyond treating injuries; it encompasses prevention, wellness, and education, empowering individuals to take charge of their health.

PHKL expressed gratitude to Dirigo Events, the runners, volunteers, and medical teams for their collaboration in making this year’s marathon a safe and successful event. Each initiative, from health fairs to expert-led workshops, reaffirms PHKL’s dedication to community engagement and sustainable healthcare practices.
