Morocco Protest Group Demands Government Dismissal Amid Unrest

Mass protests in Morocco have escalated as the group leading the demonstrations, known as GenZ 212, called for the dismissal of the government on October 3, 2023. This call follows a wave of unrest that has resulted in the deaths of three individuals during confrontations with law enforcement. The protests, which have persisted for six consecutive days, primarily address the urgent need for reforms in the health and education sectors.
The unrest intensified after reports surfaced regarding the tragic deaths of eight pregnant women at a public hospital in Agadir, igniting public outrage over social inequality. Demonstrations have occurred across the kingdom, with participants voicing their demands for better public services, particularly as Morocco prepares to host significant events such as the Africa Cup of Nations in December and the 2030 World Cup.
In a statement, GenZ 212 expressed that their demand for the government’s resignation is based on a constitutional provision that empowers His Majesty the King to appoint and dismiss the Prime Minister and cabinet members. The group has utilized the Discord messaging platform to coordinate protests and has distanced itself from the violence that has marred some demonstrations.
Government Response and Calls for Dialogue
On the same day, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch addressed the nation, stating that his government is open to “engaging in dialogue” to address the protesters’ concerns. He confirmed the deaths of three demonstrators during clashes on the previous night, labeling the events as “regrettable.” According to an interior ministry spokesperson, the fatalities occurred when demonstrators attempted to storm a local law enforcement station, prompting a police response.
The ministry initially reported that two protesters died when officers opened fire on a group they claimed was armed with bladed weapons. Following the unrest, health minister Amine Tehraoui acknowledged that while several reforms are underway, they remain insufficient to address the existing gaps in the healthcare sector.
The protests have led to over 400 arrests, primarily involving young individuals. Many demonstrators have sustained injuries, with nearly 300 reported, including members of the security forces. The ministry also indicated that approximately 80 public and private establishments have been vandalized during the unrest, along with damage to hundreds of vehicles. A total of 134 individuals are facing upcoming trials in Rabat, with six currently in detention.
Public Sentiment and Future Actions
Participants in the protests have rallied under slogans calling for “the fall of corruption” and have demanded “freedom, dignity, and social justice.” Despite advocating for protests, GenZ 212 has reaffirmed its commitment to the nation and expressed loyalty to the king, Mohammed VI, while also criticizing certain political parties.
Incidents of violence have occurred in various cities, including Sidi Bibi, where protesters reportedly ignited fires at local government offices. In Sale, north of Rabat, demonstrators were witnessed setting fire to police vehicles and a bank branch. Local residents have voiced concerns, stating that those engaging in vandalism do not represent the peaceful intentions of GenZ 212.
As protests continue, the group has urged participants to maintain peaceful demonstrations, emphasizing a “civilised and responsible expression” of their demands. The situation remains fluid as Morocco grapples with the dual challenges of public discontent and a need for social reform.
