Singapore Urges Hamas to Accept Trump’s Gaza Peace Proposal

Singapore has expressed its support for United States President Donald Trump‘s initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In a statement issued on September 30, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) called on Hamas to accept the proposed peace plan, which has already garnered backing from Israel.
The MFA spokesperson emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Singapore welcomes US President Donald Trump’s ‘Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict’ which has been agreed to by Israel. We call on Hamas to accept the proposal in order to end the war in Gaza.” The statement highlights Singapore’s commitment to an immediate ceasefire and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance for Palestinian civilians.
Calls for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid
Singapore’s position includes a demand for the immediate release of all remaining hostages and a surge of humanitarian aid to assist those affected in Gaza. The spokesperson reiterated the necessity for dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians to foster a political framework conducive to peaceful coexistence.
“We believe that a negotiated two-state solution, consistent with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, is the only viable pathway to achieve a comprehensive, just and durable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the spokesperson stated.
The peace proposal, consisting of 20 points, has received support from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but is still under consideration by Hamas, which governs Gaza. The plan presents a challenging situation for Hamas, as it requires the group to make significant concessions in exchange for potential benefits.
Details of the Peace Proposal
If Hamas rejects the plan, the United States may permit Israel to intensify its military actions in the already devastated region. Key elements of the proposal include an immediate ceasefire, a swap of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Notably, the plan offers only vague assurances regarding the future possibility of Palestinian statehood.
The immediate goal outlined in the proposal is to establish a transitional government in Gaza, overseen by an international body. As the situation in the region remains precarious, Singapore’s call for acceptance of the peace plan reflects a desire for stability and humanitarian relief in Gaza.
