Trump and Netanyahu Discuss US-Sponsored Gaza Peace Proposal

President Donald Trump announced on September 29, 2023, that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to support a new US-sponsored peace plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza. During a joint press conference at the White House, Trump expressed optimism that the proposed plan could lead to a resolution of the nearly two-year conflict, contingent on acceptance by Hamas.
The 20-point proposal encompasses several key elements, including a ceasefire, the exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners, a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, disarmament of Hamas, and the establishment of a transitional government led by an international body. Trump emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “I want to thank Prime Minister Netanyahu for agreeing to the plan and for trusting that if we work together, we can bring an end to the death and destruction that we’ve seen for so many years, decades, even centuries.”
Netanyahu’s Ongoing Engagement with the US
This meeting marked Netanyahu’s fourth visit to the White House since Trump resumed office in January 2023. The Israeli leader has been keen to strengthen ties with Washington, particularly after several Western nations recognized Palestinian statehood last week, a move that has drawn criticism from both Trump and Netanyahu. As they discussed the peace proposal, Trump urged Netanyahu to endorse the deal, despite Israel’s reservations regarding certain aspects.
As of the time of the meeting, Israeli military operations were intensifying in Gaza City, with Israeli tanks advancing deeper into the area in one of the largest offensives of the conflict to date. Netanyahu has committed to eliminating Hamas from its remaining strongholds, a campaign that has resulted in significant destruction and a worsening humanitarian crisis across Gaza. The contrasting receptions Netanyahu received from Trump and the international community were evident; while he was warmly welcomed at the White House, his recent speech at the UN General Assembly faced backlash, with many delegates walking out.
Challenges and Regional Tensions
The viability of the peace proposal remains uncertain, as Hamas has not yet publicly responded to the plan. Previous US-backed ceasefire initiatives have faltered due to disagreements between Israel and Hamas. Netanyahu has consistently stated that military operations will continue until Hamas is dismantled.
In a separate diplomatic effort, Netanyahu reached out to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani to apologize for an Israeli attack in Doha. This conversation occurred while Netanyahu was attending the meeting with Trump, highlighting the complexities of regional politics. A Qatari technical team was also present at the White House, indicating ongoing discussions regarding the situation in Gaza.
The developments highlight the intricate dynamics of the Middle East conflict and the challenges ahead in achieving a lasting peace. As both leaders navigate these turbulent waters, the international community watches closely for further responses from Hamas and the potential impact of the proposed peace plan.
