The Venice Film Festival premiered Sofia Coppola’s documentary, “Marc by Sofia,” on September 5, 2023, featuring the acclaimed fashion designer Marc Jacobs. This film offers an intimate exploration of Jacobs’ creative process, highlighting his long-standing friendship with Coppola, which spans nearly three decades. The documentary debuted out of competition at the prestigious festival held on the Lido.

Coppola made a striking entrance on the red carpet, wearing a black lace gown adorned with sequins over ivory silk. In contrast, Jacobs complemented his look with a black suit jacket and leather pants, accessorized with a black bow in his hair and notably long blue fingernails. Reflecting on the film, Jacobs remarked to Rai, “Corny as this sounds, I feel like this was really a beautiful love letter, to me, my work and to our friendship.”

Insight into the Fashion World

The documentary provides an in-depth look at Jacobs, renowned as the head designer of his eponymous brand and former creative director of Louis Vuitton from 1997 to 2014. During his tenure, he reinvigorated the luxury luggage brand by introducing ready-to-wear lines and a streetwear aesthetic that resonated with younger consumers. “Marc by Sofia” follows Jacobs as he prepares for his Spring 2024 women’s show at New York Fashion Week, featuring interviews, archival footage, and candid moments from his design studio.

At the film’s outset, Jacobs candidly admits, “I really don’t have any idea at all,” as he embarks on a new season of designs. He describes the creative environment at his studio, where swatches of fabric and samples are scattered across his desk, stating, “We are not very linear in the way we work.”

Coppola, who stepped into documentary filmmaking for the first time, emphasized that the project felt personal, akin to creating a “home movie.” She explained, “It was really a personal portrait of my friend. It wasn’t a marketing piece or a commercial. It was really a sincere small project that I would just come to the office, and it was really important for me to show Marc as a creative person in his process.”

A Glimpse Behind the Scenes

The film captures the excitement and tension of the fashion show itself, showcasing models with oversized wigs and dramatic Twiggy-inspired eyelashes on the runway. Coppola noted the unique experience of filming backstage, stating, “I had never been backstage before. To see that energy and stress and excitement right before the show. And then to be able to film the show with these long lenses in a more cinematic way. And just to see the beauty and the detail of all the work that went into the show.”

The debut of “Marc by Sofia” unfolds against the backdrop of reports that LVMH, the French luxury conglomerate, is considering selling the Marc Jacobs brand, estimated to be worth approximately $1 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. This context adds another layer of significance to the film, as it highlights Jacobs’ influential role in the fashion industry and the ongoing evolution of his brand.

Coppola’s documentary not only showcases the artistry of fashion but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to her enduring friendship with Jacobs, providing viewers with a rare glimpse into the world of high fashion and the creative minds that drive it.
