Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his readiness for a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. This announcement came on August 19, 2023, following discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump and several European leaders at the White House. It would mark the first direct encounter between the two leaders since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly three and a half years ago.

During a press conference after the summit, Zelenskyy confirmed, “I confirmed – and all European leaders supported me – that we are ready for a bilateral meeting with Putin.” His comments reflect the growing urgency to seek a resolution to the conflict, particularly as Russian forces have made recent advances in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy has faced increasing pressure to make territorial concessions to secure peace. Prior to the meeting, Trump had urged Ukraine to consider relinquishing Crimea and to abandon its aspirations of joining NATO, both of which are significant points for Putin. Nonetheless, Zelenskyy emphasized that he had effectively communicated the realities of the battlefield to Trump during their one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office.

“This was the best of our meetings,” Zelenskyy stated, according to a release from his office. “I was able to show many things, even on the map, to all American colleagues regarding the situation on the battlefield.” The focus of the discussions shifted from potential concessions to the arrangement of security guarantees for Ukraine should a peace deal materialize.

French President Emmanuel Macron also commented on the summit, indicating that the emphasis was on establishing security assurances rather than forcing Ukraine into unfavorable agreements. Trump stated that these guarantees would be coordinated through various European nations in partnership with the United States.

Zelenskyy underscored the importance of clear support from the United States, saying, “It is important that the United States of America gives a clear signal that it will be among the countries that will assist, coordinate and also be participants in security guarantees for Ukraine.” He indicated that plans for these guarantees would be formalized within the next week to ten days.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the situation remains fluid, with both Ukrainian and Russian forces engaged in ongoing conflicts. The possibility of a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin could represent a critical turning point in the long-standing hostilities, potentially opening pathways to a peaceful resolution.
