Jannik Sinner Overcomes Terence Atmane to Reach Cincinnati Final
Top seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner marked his 24th birthday with a decisive victory over French qualifier Terence Atmane at the Cincinnati Open. Sinner secured his place in the final with a score of 7-6(4) 6-2 on August 19, 2023, effectively ending Atmane’s impressive run in the tournament.
During the 86-minute match, Sinner showcased his exceptional serving skills, winning an impressive 91 percent of his first-serve points and facing no break points. This marked Sinner’s first encounter with world number 136 Atmane, who had already made headlines by defeating top-10 players Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final.
After the match, Sinner reflected on the challenge posed by Atmane, stating, “Very, very tough challenge. Every time when you play against someone completely new, it’s very difficult. I knew that I had to be very, very careful.” The crowd joined in to celebrate his birthday with a rendition of “Happy Birthday,” adding to the atmosphere.
The first set was tightly contested, featuring strong serving from both players and no break point opportunities. Sinner lost just three points on serve in the opening set. He held serve to love for a third consecutive game, leading to a tiebreak where Atmane faltered with a double fault, granting Sinner an early edge that he maintained throughout.
As the second set began, Sinner continued to apply pressure. He opened with a nine-minute hold of serve and quickly established a 3-1 lead after breaking Atmane. Following another hold to love, Sinner moved ahead 4-1, significantly diminishing Atmane’s hopes of a comeback.
With Atmane serving to stay in the match at 2-5, Sinner seized control, quickly leading 0-40. He closed out the match on his third match point when Atmane sent a forehand into the net.
Sinner’s victory sets up a highly anticipated final, where he will face either second seed Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev on August 21, 2023, as he aims to defend his title and continue his strong form heading into the U.S. Open.
