A social media influencer has garnered significant attention after spending a week living in Changi Airport, Singapore, which was recently recognized as the World’s Best Airport 2025 by the Skytrax World Airport Awards. Maddy Macrae, 32, shared her unique experience with her 1.9 million TikTok followers, describing the stay as both enjoyable and enlightening.

Macrae, who hails from Sydney, Australia, embarked on this journey as a “social experiment” aimed at exploring the dynamics of life within one of the world’s busiest airports. In an interview with news.com.au, she reflected on her time there, stating, “I wanted to see what it would be like, to see if I would go crazy, would I go insane, but I didn’t; it just felt like a holiday.”

Living at Changi Airport

During her stay, Macrae resided at the Crowne Plaza hotel located in Terminal 3, which provided her with amenities that enhanced her experience. “The worst thing about layovers is you’re stuck inside, but the hotel has a pool that’s outdoors,” she noted. “Having that fresh air available to you is so nice, so is having access to a nice shower and gym.”

One of the most striking aspects she noticed was how time seemed to lose its meaning within the airport environment. Macrae remarked, “The phenomenon around airport limbo exists even when you live there. So time is a construct and having a cocktail at 7am, whether you’re living there or not, is absolutely on the cards.” She humorously recalled indulging in a cocktail at 10am, emphasizing that the airport atmosphere is remarkably relaxed.

Unique Experiences and Attractions

Macrae’s adventure was not solely about living in the airport; she also took advantage of the various cultural offerings available at Changi. She highlighted the wealth of activities, many of which are free. “There’s so much great cultural food and experiences you can do without leaving the airport,” she said.

Additionally, she participated in a complimentary outside tour that showcased local attractions, such as the iconic Marina Bay. “I did do a free tour which took me to the river and Marina Bay,” she explained. “It’s actually available to people who haven’t even cleared immigration. You can be on the airport side and have a long layover and go on this free tour.”

Among the airport’s most famous attractions is the Jewel Rain Vortex, recognized as the world’s tallest indoor waterfall at 40 meters high. Other highlights include a bamboo grove, a butterfly garden, and a hedge maze. For those looking to burn off some energy after a flight, Changi Airport also features a trampoline park and a climbing wall.

Macrae’s experience has sparked interest in the unique lifestyle that can be found within airport confines, showcasing that living in such a space can feel surprisingly like a vacation. With numerous activities and amenities at her disposal, she successfully transformed what might be considered a tedious wait for flights into an engaging and enjoyable week-long journey.
