BMW Eurokars has unveiled three bespoke art cars in collaboration with the Fernando Botero Foundation as part of the Botero in Singapore exhibition, taking place at the IMBA Theatre within Gardens by the Bay. This unique exhibition, which showcases the work of the late Colombian artist Fernando Botero, is notable for being the largest of its kind, featuring over 130 original works that include striking bronze sculptures and immersive installations.

A Unique Artistic Collaboration

The exhibition, running until May 18, 2024, marks a significant cultural event in Singapore, as it is the first stop in Southeast Asia before moving to major cities such as Rome. The Botero showcase is divided into three distinct segments: Life in Fullness, an immersive experience with audio narration by Botero himself; Heart of Volume, a gallery display of paintings and sculptures from the Botero family collection; and Garden Grandeur, which features monumental outdoor sculptures.

As the official automotive partner, BMW Eurokars has transformed Botero’s visual language into three exclusive vehicles: a BMW 735i, a BMW iX40, and a second BMW 735i. Each car represents the artist’s signature style, highlighting the themes of volume and presence through unique graphic treatments. This initiative is particularly timely as it coincides with the upcoming Year of the Horse.

Art Meets Automotive Design

The bespoke cars are designed to reflect the commanding presence of a horse—powerful yet poised—creating a compelling dialogue between art and automotive excellence. The first two art cars are on display at the BMW Eurokars Experience Centre until February 22, while the third will be featured at IMBA starting in late January. These vehicles are available for purchase, with prices provided upon inquiry.

BMW is no stranger to blending art with its automotive designs, having previously collaborated with renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jeff Koons. This partnership with the Fernando Botero Foundation represents a new chapter in the brand’s artistic ventures, as noted by Botero Jr., who currently oversees the Foundation.

“Art and luxury go hand-in-hand, and luxury brands are interested in partnering with respected artists,” Botero Jr. stated, expressing his commitment to remaining faithful to BMW in future collaborations.

The exhibition and the bespoke cars are more than just an artistic display; they represent a legacy of culture and creativity. Botero Jr. highlighted the importance of cultural engagement in his upbringing, emphasizing his father’s belief that a strong cultural foundation leads to a fulfilling life. “He always asked, ‘What books are you reading? What music are you listening to?’” Botero Jr. recalled, reflecting on the values instilled in him.

The Botero family continues to play a significant role in the legacy of the artist, with Botero Jr. noting that while none of his descendants have inherited their father’s artistic talent, they contribute to his legacy in various ways. As he prepares to turn 70 this year, Botero Jr. looks to the future with optimism, embracing the lessons learned from his father’s commitment to hard work and cultural engagement.

In conclusion, the Botero in Singapore exhibition, featuring the artistic vehicles from BMW Eurokars, is a remarkable confluence of art and design. Visitors can experience this unique showcase at Gardens by the Bay until mid-May, engaging with the vibrant legacy of Fernando Botero and the innovative spirit of BMW.
