BMW Eurokars Unveils Unique Art Cars at Botero Exhibition in Singapore
BMW Eurokars has unveiled three bespoke art cars inspired by the works of renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero at the Botero in Singapore exhibition, held at the newly established IMBA Theatre in Gardens by the Bay. This collaboration marks a significant artistic venture, blending automotive design with the distinctive voluminous style that Botero is famous for. The exhibition, which showcases over 130 original pieces, is set to run until May 18, 2024.
During a private lecture at the BMW Eurokars Experience Centre, Fernando Botero Jr., the eldest son of the late artist, discussed the philosophy behind his father’s artistic vision. Botero Jr. explained that his father’s style, known as Boterismo, is characterized by exaggerated forms, where volume is seen as the essence of beauty. “For him, volume is the essence of beauty,” Botero Jr. stated, emphasizing that it applies not just to figures but also to objects like trees and animals.
Art Cars: A Tribute to Volume and Power
As part of the exhibition, BMW Eurokars has created three unique vehicles that embody the spirit of Botero’s art. The collection includes a BMW 735i, a BMW iX40, and a second BMW 735i, each featuring designs that reflect the commanding presence of a horse. The project aims to create a dialogue between the automobile and the artistic themes of power and elegance.
The cars are being displayed at the BMW Eurokars Experience Centre until February 22, 2024, with the third vehicle set to be showcased at IMBA later in January. Prices for the vehicles are available upon inquiry, inviting collectors and art enthusiasts alike to explore this intersection of art and luxury.
Botero Jr. highlighted the significance of this collaboration, noting that it represents the first time the Fernando Botero Foundation has partnered with BMW. He remarked, “Art and luxury go hand-in-hand, and luxury brands around the world are, in many ways, interested in partnering with very important, respected artists.”
A Legacy of Culture and Hard Work
During the event, Botero Jr. reflected on the legacy of his father, who influenced not only his artistic career but also the values instilled in his family. Despite not pursuing art professionally, Botero Jr. sees his role in the foundation as an extension of his father’s legacy. He previously served in various government positions, including as Minister of National Defense of Colombia, before dedicating himself to preserving Botero’s artistic contributions.
“If you work hard, if you work honestly, every issue can be resolved,” Botero Jr. shared about the life lessons imparted by his father.
He also mentioned that although none of Botero’s children have inherited their father’s artistic talent, they have each found their own paths. Botero Jr. expressed pride in his family’s cultural upbringing, stating that his father prioritized cultural development over academic grades. “What books are you reading? What music are you listening to?” were common questions in their household, reflecting Botero’s belief in the importance of a strong cultural foundation.
The Botero in Singapore exhibition not only showcases the artist’s work but also celebrates the rich cultural dialogue between art and other fields, such as automotive design. As the exhibition continues to unfold at Gardens by the Bay, it promises to captivate audiences with its immersive approach and the unique blend of art and luxury that BMW Eurokars has brought to life.
