British Illustrator Unveils Taiwan-Themed Bus in London
British illustrator Hannah Gibson, known by her pen name Hanzsiie, has launched a vibrant and creative project that celebrates her experiences in Taiwan. This month, she unveiled a Taiwan-themed sightseeing bus in London, which features the slogan “Step into Taiwan. Warmth, All Year Round.” The bus design presents a colorful, hand-drawn alternative to conventional tourist advertisements.
During her visit to Taiwan in May 2023, Gibson was struck by the warmth and friendliness of the local people. This impression inspired her to create a series of illustrated postcards that capture the essence of her journey. While back in London and working on her illustrations, she encountered Taiwan tourism ads on local buses, prompting her to reach out to the Taiwan tourism office in London. “To my surprise, they got back to me,” she noted.
The tourism office has a history of promoting Taiwan through themed campaigns on taxis, metro stations, and buses. However, Gibson’s project marks a significant milestone as it is the first to fully wrap a sightseeing bus with original hand-drawn artwork. The bus is adorned with a warm, golden-yellow background, prominently displaying “Taiwan” on both the side and rear.
Artistic Representation of Taiwan’s Culture
Gibson’s designs incorporate a variety of motifs that reflect Taiwan’s rich culture and vibrant lifestyle. Elements such as street food stalls, hot springs, temples, railways, mountains, beaches, and the iconic Taipei 101 feature prominently, alongside symbols of popular culture like bubble tea and New Year fireworks.
The illustrator expressed that her lively, hand-drawn style is meant to convey the warmth she felt from Taiwanese people during her interactions. She shared a memorable experience of quickly befriending a hairdresser during a salon visit, who generously offered recommendations on local sights, food, and activities. “In Taiwan, people are really kind and understanding,” Gibson said. “I want to recreate that warmth in my illustration.”
Engaging Tourists with Interactive Features
The Taiwan-themed bus will travel past several notable London landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the London Eye, and Piccadilly Circus. In a bid to enhance the tourist experience, the bus features QR codes that provide access to travel information about Taiwan, making it easier for potential visitors to explore the island’s offerings.
Gibson’s project not only promotes Taiwan as a travel destination but also serves as a bridge that connects cultures through art. As her bus makes its way through the streets of London, it invites both locals and tourists to “step into Taiwan” and experience the warmth and hospitality that she encountered during her travels.
