Trump Announces US Control Over Venezuela After Maduro Capture
On January 3, 2024, Donald Trump announced that the United States will assume control over Venezuela following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Speaking at a press conference, Trump declared that the US would oversee the country until a “safe, proper, and judicious transition” could occur. He emphasized the importance of avoiding a repeat of the longstanding power struggles that have plagued the nation.
Details of the Operation
Trump characterized the military operation that led to Maduro’s capture as “an assault not seen since World War II.” He described it as “one of the most stunning and effective displays of American power, might, and competence” in history. The president drew comparisons to previous military strikes, including Operation Midnight Hammer, which targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities last July, and the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in 2020.
According to Trump, all Venezuelan military capabilities were “rendered powerless” during the operation, which resulted in no American casualties or loss of equipment. He confirmed that Maduro and Flores will face drug trafficking and narco-terrorism charges in New York. Trump shared a photo on his Truth Social platform showing Maduro aboard the warship USS Iwo Jima.
Venezuela’s Response
In response to the US actions, the Venezuelan government condemned what it termed “military aggression.” A statement released by the government declared a national emergency and urged social and political forces to activate mobilization plans. Reports indicated that attacks occurred in the capital, Caracas, as well as in the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira, with at least seven explosions and low-flying aircraft reported around 02:00 local time.
Pamela Bondi, the Attorney General, confirmed the charges against Maduro and Flores, stating they have been indicted in the Southern District of New York. “They will face the full wrath of American justice,” she added.
This situation is rapidly developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
