Thai Designer Transforms Eyewear with Custom Glasses in Bangkok
In Bangkok, Thailand, designer Chaiwat Wattananukit has revolutionised the eyewear market with his bespoke glasses studio, Gimm. Founded in 2014, Gimm allows customers to create unique eyewear tailored to their specific preferences, face shapes, and sizes. This personalised approach distinguishes Gimm from conventional optical stores, where shoppers typically choose from pre-made selections.
The studio offers a distinctive experience, combining craftsmanship with creativity. A glance at Gimm’s Instagram page showcases a range of vibrant designs that promote individuality, alongside elegant classics that embody sophistication. Each pair of glasses reflects Gimm’s core values: functionality, artistry, and personal expression.
From Jewellery to Eyewear Innovation
Wattananukit, who holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from Chulalongkorn University and a master’s degree in Jewellery and Related Products from the Birmingham School of Jewellery in the UK, initially launched Gimm as a jewellery brand in 2003. His venture into eyewear began when he struggled to find glasses that fit his own face comfortably. “I decided to make my own glasses,” he explained, which ultimately opened a new avenue for his creative talents.
With growing demand for customised eyewear, Wattananukit shifted his focus, and Gimm transformed into a full-fledged eyewear design studio by 2014. The name “Gimm” references his nickname and also evokes the concept of a ‘gimmick’, highlighting the playful yet serious nature of his designs.
The Bespoke Creation Process
Creating a pair of Gimm glasses is a meticulous process that can take up to eight weeks. The journey begins with a comprehensive consultation, during which facial measurements are taken, and customers can explore various frame shapes, colours, and materials until they are satisfied with their design. Each pair is handcrafted by Wattananukit, requiring between five and fourteen days for completion.
Wattananukit emphasises the skill involved in polishing the frames, stating, “It’s all about mastering the rhythm of pressure, the balance of motion.” His approach is not just technical; it involves an intuitive understanding of the materials.
Once the glasses are finished, customers return for a fitting session where adjustments are made for optimal comfort and proportion. The materials used include high-quality acetate sourced from Japan, China, and Italy, with Wattananukit personally travelling to Japan each year to ensure top-quality supplies.
One of Wattananukit’s notable designs is inspired by Japan’s winter landscapes, featuring a unique combination of clear acetate and silver metal, reminiscent of branches adorned with ice.
A Global Reach and Educational Initiatives
Gimm operates as a small studio with two part-time assistants, catering to a diverse clientele from around the world. Customers can visit the studio in Ekkamai, Bangkok, or arrange online consultations for bespoke designs. Prices for ready-made frames start at S$476, while bespoke creations begin at S$794. The most expensive pair crafted to date, made from 18K gold, retails for approximately S$7,144.
Wattananukit also offers one-on-one classes for those interested in learning the art of eyewear design. “A beginner class takes three days,” he shared. “At the end, the student gets to keep the frames they’ve made.” These workshops not only provide a creative outlet but also serve as a foundation for aspiring designers looking to enter the bespoke eyewear market.
For frame maintenance, Wattananukit advises simple cleaning methods: acetate frames can be washed with mild soap, while horn frames should be regularly conditioned with coconut or olive oil.
Located at 89 Thong Lo 20 Alley, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana, Bangkok 10110, Gimm continues to thrive as a beacon of innovation in the eyewear industry, committed to precision and the personal touch that defines each pair of glasses.
