Taiwan Vows Strong Defense Against China at Major Forum

Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te firmly stated the island’s commitment to self-defense during a forum held on September 20, 2023. This event concluded a week of significant defense discussions, emphasizing Taiwan’s resolve amid increasing military pressure from China. Lai’s remarks serve as a clear message to the international community: Taiwan has not surrendered and remains steadfast in its defense against any potential invasion.

At the forum, which focused on enhancing Taiwan’s preparedness for natural disasters and military threats, Lai introduced the government’s new civil defense handbook. Launched earlier in the week, this handbook aims to equip citizens with essential safety information in the event of an attack. “In the event of a military invasion of Taiwan, any claim that the government has surrendered or that the nation has been defeated is false,” Lai declared, underscoring the handbook’s critical messages.

Strengthening Defense and International Collaboration

As commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Republic of China, Lai reassured both citizens and global allies of Taiwan’s unwavering determination to protect its freedom and democracy. “We are determined to defend freedom and democracy and a sustainable Taiwan,” he affirmed. The sentiment resonates particularly given China’s long-standing claims over Taiwan, which it views as a part of its territory and has not ruled out using military force to assert control.

In light of these developments, Taiwan recently hosted its largest arms exhibition, attracting numerous international defense companies eager to engage with the island’s increasing defense budget. This initiative reflects Taiwan’s proactive approach to seeking closer ties with global defense manufacturers, including opportunities for joint weapon production.

During a separate event on the same day, Brandon Tseng, president of the U.S. company Shield AI, announced plans for significant investment in Taiwan. Over the next three to five years, the company expects to employ hundreds of individuals on the island. “It’s a region that Shield AI is deeply investing in and deeply committed to,” Tseng remarked, highlighting the company’s presence at the arms show with its V-BAT drones, which have been successfully deployed in combat scenarios, including in Ukraine.

Tseng also revealed that Shield AI has entered into a “teaming agreement” with Taiwan’s defense contractor Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation. While details regarding potential sales remain undisclosed, this partnership signifies a growing collaboration in defense technology between Taiwan and international firms.

As Taiwan navigates its complex relationship with China, the government’s initiatives and collaborations with global defense entities underscore its commitment to maintaining security and sovereignty.
