Strong 6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Simeulue Island
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Simeulue Island, located off the coast of Sumatra, on Thursday, November 27, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at 11:56 AM local time and had a depth of 25 kilometers. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warnings following the seismic event.
Residents on Simeulue Island reacted quickly, evacuating buildings and taking to the streets. One local, identified only as Ahmadi, described his experience, saying, “I was sitting down at a coffee shop when suddenly the table was shaking. Many people rushed outside of buildings and houses.” He noted that the tremors lasted approximately seven seconds and mentioned experiencing several aftershocks, which were shorter in duration.
The Indian Ocean tsunami warning center promptly announced that there was “no threat” of a tsunami resulting from the earthquake. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s own Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the quake with a slightly different magnitude of 6.3 at a depth of 10 kilometers, also confirming that it did not have the potential to generate a tsunami.
Indonesia, a vast archipelago in Southeast Asia, is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic activity due to the collision of tectonic plates. This region has a history of devastating earthquakes. For instance, a magnitude-6.2 earthquake in January 2021 on Sulawesi Island resulted in over 100 fatalities and left thousands homeless. In a more catastrophic incident, a magnitude-7.5 quake followed by a tsunami in Palu in 2018 caused more than 2,200 deaths.
As residents of Simeulue Island assess the aftermath of the quake, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring seismic activity in the region. The quick response and lack of reported damage reflect the preparedness of both local communities and emergency services in an area accustomed to such natural events.
