Singapore will open its first embassy in Mexico in 2026, marking a significant step in enhancing diplomatic relations between the two countries. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam made the announcement during his inaugural state visit to Mexico, which commenced on December 1 and is set to last until December 3. This move is part of Singapore’s broader strategy to deepen ties in the Spanish-speaking world, as it will be the nation’s second embassy in Latin America, following the establishment of its first in Brazil in 2012.

During a joint press conference with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City, Mr. Tharman described the embassy opening as a “significant milestone.” He emphasized that this decision reflects Singapore’s confidence in Mexico’s future and aims to facilitate more active engagement with Mexican leaders, officials, and the business and cultural communities.

The embassy is expected to bolster bilateral economic and people-to-people connections between Singapore and Mexico while enhancing consular support for Singaporeans residing in Mexico. According to a statement from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the embassy will be the 87th diplomatic mission in Mexico, further illustrating the growing international interest in the country.

Strengthening Economic Ties

The discussions between Mr. Tharman and Ms. Sheinbaum included a reaffirmation of the strong and friendly relations between Singapore and Mexico, commemorating 50 years of diplomatic ties. The two leaders also addressed the Pacific Alliance-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, signed on January 26, 2022, which is awaiting ratification by Mexico. The agreement is anticipated to enhance trade and investment opportunities between the two nations and strengthen inter-regional connectivity between Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Ms. Sheinbaum expressed her enthusiasm for Singaporean companies’ interest in investing across various sectors outlined in her national development plan, Plan Mexico. These sectors encompass technology, innovation, and energy, including oil and gas.

In addition to economic discussions, both leaders witnessed the signing of two memorandums of understanding focused on coral reef restoration and international development cooperation. This highlights the growing opportunities for collaboration in other areas of mutual interest.

Mr. Tharman extended an invitation to Ms. Sheinbaum for a state visit to Singapore, further solidifying the commitment to fostering deeper bilateral relations. As both countries look forward to the future, the establishment of the embassy stands as a testament to their enduring partnership and shared aspirations.
