President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia visited Qatar on September 12, 2023, to express solidarity following a recent Israeli airstrike that targeted leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. During his visit, Prabowo met with Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani at the Lusail Palace, affirming Indonesia’s support for Qatar’s sovereignty and its people.

The urgency of Prabowo’s visit was highlighted by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, who stated that the trip was made promptly in response to the Israeli attack on Doha earlier that week. The Indonesian government views the airstrike as a serious violation of international law and a potential catalyst for escalating conflict in the Middle East. According to Antara, Indonesia stands firmly with Qatar amid rising regional tensions.

Hamas reported that five of its members were killed in the airstrike, which included notable figures such as Khalil al-Hayya, a senior negotiator and son of its exiled Gaza chief. Qatar condemned the attack as “cowardly” and a blatant violation of international law. Qatar’s Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, indicated that a collective response from regional partners is being discussed.

The United Nations Security Council also condemned the attack, calling for de-escalation and expressing solidarity with Qatar. The statement required consensus among all 15 council members, including the United States, which has a strategic partnership with Qatar, hosting the significant al-Udeid Air Base.

### Diplomatic Engagements in the Gulf

Following his meeting with the emir, Prabowo traveled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to meet with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The two leaders discussed regional and international issues, including the implications of the Israeli strike. Both emphasized that such actions compromise regional security and stability.

The Emirates News Agency reported that Prabowo and Sheikh Mohammed also explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas like economy, investment, and renewable energy. Indonesia and the UAE maintain a Comprehensive Economic Partnership, reflecting a commitment to mutual growth.

Prabowo’s delegation included Foreign Minister Sugiono, who, like many Indonesians, is known by a single name. Observers note that Prabowo’s more active engagement in foreign affairs marks a shift from the policies of his predecessor, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

### Rising Importance of the Middle East

Indonesia, as Southeast Asia’s largest economy and home to the world’s largest Muslim population, has increasingly focused on strengthening ties with Middle Eastern nations. In April 2023, Prabowo embarked on a six-day tour of the region, visiting countries such as Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan, where he signed various agreements covering defense, energy, education, and investment.

As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, Prabowo’s recent engagements underscore Indonesia’s commitment to playing a significant role in regional diplomacy, particularly regarding issues affecting its Muslim-majority population. The ongoing conflict poses challenges not only for Israel and Hamas but also for broader regional stability, with Indonesia positioning itself as a mediator and advocate for peace.
