Pope Leo XIV Calls for Courageous Dialogue in Christmas Message
Pope Leo XIV delivered a poignant Christmas message on December 25, 2023, urging both Russia and Ukraine to engage in direct dialogue to address the ongoing conflict. In his first Christmas address since being elected in May, the Pope emphasized the need for “courage” among the leaders of the two nations amid a severe humanitarian crisis exacerbated by war. Speaking to approximately 26,000 attendees in St. Peter’s Square, he condemned the “senselessness” of warfare, highlighting the devastation it causes.
The Pope’s message comes as the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with hundreds of thousands still displaced and living in temporary shelters following recent conflicts. He called for “solidarity with and acceptance of those in need” across Europe, alluding to rising anti-immigration sentiments on the continent. “Let us pray in a particular way for the tormented people of Ukraine,” he stated, encouraging all parties involved, supported by the international community, to pursue “sincere, direct and respectful dialogue.”
Recent communications between Russian and Ukrainian officials and US negotiators indicate ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The war has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities, severe destruction in eastern Ukraine, and millions displaced from their homes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently proposed key elements for a potential peace plan during talks in the United States, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown little inclination to compromise, insisting on stringent demands.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
In his address, Pope Leo XIV also highlighted the dire conditions in Gaza, where many residents are enduring harsh winter weather in inadequate shelters. He expressed deep concern for those living in tents, exposed to rain, wind, and cold. “How … can we not think of the tents in Gaza, exposed for weeks to rain, wind and cold,” he remarked, emphasizing the plight of individuals who have “nothing left and have lost everything.”
According to the United Nations, around 1.3 million people in Gaza require shelter assistance, with warnings of increased risk of hypothermia as temperatures drop. Elias al-Jalda, a Palestinian Christian from Gaza, echoed the Pope’s sentiments after attending a Christmas mass at the only Roman Catholic Church in the area. “We hope this year will mark the beginning of a new phase—one defined by a complete end to the war and the return of life to Gaza,” he said.
Celebrations Across the Region
In contrast, celebrations in Bethlehem marked a significant moment for the Christian community as they gathered for Christmas mass for the first time in over two years, following the recent conflict in Gaza. Hundreds of worshippers filled the Church of the Nativity, the traditional birthplace of Jesus Christ, for a festive mass that brought joy to the community.
The streets of Bethlehem were alive with activity as families participated in parades, and local vendors sold festive treats. Seventeen-year-old Milagros Anstas expressed the joy of the occasion, stating, “Today is full of joy because we haven’t been able to celebrate because of the war.” The atmosphere was further brightened by colorful lights and decorations throughout Manger Square, creating a vibrant backdrop for the holiday festivities.
Across Syria, Christmas celebrations in Damascus were marked with hope, despite ongoing fears of violence. The Old City was adorned with festive lights, and local residents expressed their desire for peace and joy. Student Loris Aasaf stated, “Syria deserves joy and for us to be happy, and to hope for a new future.”
In the United States, contrasting messages emerged during the Christmas season. President Donald Trump sent greetings that included divisive rhetoric, wishing a Merry Christmas “to everyone, including the radical left-wing scum.” Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese conveyed a somber message in light of recent violence against Jewish communities, emphasizing the weight of sorrow experienced during the holiday.
The Christmas messages from various leaders highlight the complex interplay of joy and sorrow during this festive season, with calls for unity and healing amidst ongoing conflicts around the globe.
