Philippine Red Cross Mobilizes for Aid Amid Typhoon Crisis
The Philippine Red Cross is urgently clearing debris and delivering aid following the destruction caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi, while simultaneously preparing for another potential storm, Typhoon Fung-wong. According to the humanitarian organization’s chairman and CEO, Richard Gordon, the new storm could significantly impact the central Philippines this weekend. “It looks like it’s going to be a very, very big one,” he stated on November 7, 2023, during an interview with CNA’s Asia First programme.
Forecasters predict that Fung-wong, locally known as Uwan, could expand to a diameter of 1,400 kilometers before making landfall in northern Aurora province or surrounding areas. As a precaution, evacuation centers are being established and residents in coastal regions are being advised to prepare for possible relocation.
Urgent Need for Resources
Gordon emphasized the urgent requirement for additional resources to facilitate the distribution of essential supplies and to bring in heavy machinery, such as payloaders, to assist in debris clearance. He remarked, “We’re very quick to move and make sure that the funds that we get are delivered.” This response comes as the Philippines, which experiences an average of 20 storms and typhoons annually, faces increasing frequency of such natural disasters.
The aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi has been devastating. Since making landfall on November 5, the storm has resulted in over 180 fatalities and left at least 135 people missing, marking it as the deadliest natural disaster in the country this year. Gordon noted that the Red Cross teams are working tirelessly under challenging conditions, facing floods and severe damage. “It’s been a terrifying typhoon. Right now, we’re still trying to sort out all the debris,” he added, highlighting the urgent need for food and water in affected areas.
National Emergency Declared
In response to the devastation caused by Kalmaegi, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of national emergency on November 7. The President visited Cebu, the province hardest hit by the storm, to assess the damage first-hand. The declaration has placed the health department on heightened alert, indicating a nationwide mobilization to address the crisis.
Gordon stated that the Red Cross is closely coordinating with government authorities to ensure that aid reaches affected communities swiftly. He acknowledged the organization’s role in supporting government efforts during these challenging times, saying, “The Red Cross has had its fair share in helping the government and cooperating with the government in many of these challenges, and we have been successful doing that.”
The aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi has also intensified public scrutiny regarding alleged corruption surrounding flood control projects in the region. Reports suggest that some projects were either substandard or never constructed, leading to an ongoing investigation implicating several government officials and lawmakers. Gordon, a former Philippine senator, highlighted the necessity of accountability to restore public trust, noting that citizens are increasingly vocal in their demands for transparency.
As the Philippine Red Cross continues its relief operations, the organization remains focused on strengthening its volunteer network and logistics in preparation for the challenges that lie ahead.
