Manhunt Underway for Gunman After Fatal Shooting of Police Officers
A manhunt is currently underway for a 56-year-old Australian man, identified as Dezi Freeman, following a tragic incident on August 27, 2023, in which he shot and killed two police officers and injured a third in the small town of Porepunkah, located in northeastern Victoria state. Local authorities are actively searching for Freeman, who is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
According to Victoria Police, the violent encounter occurred when ten police officers arrived at Freeman’s rural property to execute a search warrant. As they approached, Freeman opened fire, leading to a chaotic shootout that lasted just minutes. The incident resulted in the deaths of a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable. The injured officer underwent surgery and, while significantly injured, is expected to recover.
Speaking at a press conference, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush emphasized the urgency of the situation. “The suspect for this horrific event is still at large. I can assure everyone that we are pouring every resource into this search for this person. We must find him,” he stated, noting Freeman’s dangerousness given the fatalities.
The police have established a wide cordon around the crime scene, which includes a house and a bus. Officers have also engaged with Freeman’s partner and children to ensure their safety and to rule out any possibility of a hostage situation. Authorities believe Freeman possesses multiple “powerful” firearms.
Bush indicated that police had returned fire during the encounter, although it appears Freeman was not injured. The circumstances surrounding the original search warrant have not been disclosed, but the police unit involved included local officers alongside members of the sexual offences and child investigation squad.
The manhunt presents significant challenges, as Freeman is believed to have a deep understanding of the local terrain and bushcraft skills, making him adept at surviving in nature. “He will know that area better than us,” Bush remarked, highlighting the complexities of apprehending an individual with such knowledge.
As the search continues, authorities remain vigilant, urging the public to report any sightings or information that could assist in locating Freeman. The community of Porepunkah, while reeling from the tragedy, is now on high alert as police intensify their efforts to bring the suspect into custody.
