Malaysia’s Army Chief Placed on Leave During Corruption Probe
Malaysia’s Defence Minister Khaled Nordin announced on December 27, 2023, that the country’s army chief, Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, has been placed on leave pending an investigation into serious allegations against him. The decision is intended to facilitate a thorough inquiry without any potential conflict of interest. In a statement reported by the New Straits Times, Khaled confirmed that Jantan would be on leave with immediate effect until the investigations are concluded.
While the minister did not elaborate on the specific allegations, reports indicate that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has summoned three individuals related to procurement processes involving army projects. These investigations reportedly began on December 23 after a formal complaint was lodged by activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegubard. Badrul, who leads the Port Dickson branch of the opposition party Bersatu, claimed that substantial cash inflows were identified in the bank accounts of a senior military officer and his family, allegedly from companies awarded military contracts.
In a related development, anti-graft officials have initiated a preliminary probe into various projects associated with the army dating back to 2023. Khaled has previously stated that his ministry would await the findings of the official investigation before taking any action regarding the allegations against Jantan.
Leadership Transition in the Malaysian Armed Forces
In light of these events, Khaled also announced that Navy Chief Zulhelmy Ithnain will assume the responsibilities of the Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces immediately. This transition comes ahead of the expected retirement of current chief Nizam Jaffar. Reports have suggested that both Nizam and Razali Alias, who heads the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation, are nearing the mandatory retirement age of 60, which they will reach next year.
Khaled denied any connection between the upcoming retirements and the ongoing anti-corruption investigation. Speculation had arisen regarding their departures, particularly following the arrest of ten individuals, including military personnel, suspected of involvement in a drug-smuggling operation in August.
As Malaysia navigates these serious allegations and leadership changes, the focus remains on the integrity of its armed forces and the outcomes of the ongoing investigations.
