Malaysia Education Minister Vows Action After Alleged Gang Rape

In a shocking incident, a female student in Melaka, Malaysia, has allegedly been gang-raped by senior students at her school. The alleged assault took place on October 2, 2023, at a secondary school in Alor Gajah, where the victim, a Form Three student, was reportedly attacked by two Form Five boys. Two other students are said to have witnessed the incident and recorded it.

Following the allegations, Malaysia’s Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek, emphasized that her ministry will not tolerate any cases of sexual misconduct within its educational institutions. She described the incident as “regrettable” and insisted that strict actions must be taken against the offenders. “No one will be protected,” she stated in a Facebook post on October 11, 2023.

The police have taken swift action, with Dzulkhairi Mukhtar, the Melaka police chief, confirming that the four students involved have been remanded for six days. They are being investigated under Section 375B of the Penal Code, which pertains to gang rape. This offense carries severe penalties, including a minimum jail term of 10 years and a maximum of 30 years, along with possible caning.

The incident has ignited widespread outrage, prompting calls for more stringent disciplinary measures in schools. Rahmad Mariman, the chairman of the Melaka state education, higher learning, and religious affairs committee, has voiced support for reintroducing the caning system in schools. He stressed that any such measures should focus on education rather than merely punishment, stating, “It must be implemented wisely in a bid to educate and not to inflict pain.”

The Ministry of Education has ordered the school, the district education office, and the state education department to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The case, reported by the Malay daily Sinar Harian, has raised significant concerns about the safety of students in Malaysian schools and the need for effective measures to address sexual violence.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victim and accountability for the alleged perpetrators. The Education Minister’s commitment to confronting such serious allegations underscores a broader societal need to address and prevent sexual misconduct in educational settings across the country.
