Kremlin Confirms US-Russia Talks Will Continue Despite Sanctions Threat
The Kremlin stated on July 18, 2023, that it does not view the recent sanctions threat from US President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a barrier to continuing talks with the United States. The remarks came after Trump announced a new approach to Russia, setting a 50-day deadline for Moscow to agree to a ceasefire or face additional sanctions.
Following Trump’s announcement, which included plans to supply more missiles to Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed strong disapproval of the escalation. The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, responded to inquiries about whether Trump’s toughened stance would end the negotiations aimed at improving US-Russia relations, stating, “We assume that this is not what it means.”
Peskov emphasized that the issues surrounding the Ukrainian conflict and the state of bilateral relations are separate matters. He highlighted that numerous “irritants” and challenges remain in the relationship between Moscow and Washington, which he described as being “in a deplorable state.”
Despite the tensions, there had been signs of a thaw in US-Russia relations after Trump took office in January 2023. However, frustrations have mounted as Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions laid out by President Vladimir Putin for a potential ceasefire.
Earlier this year, both Russia and Ukraine engaged in two rounds of peace talks in Turkey, resulting in an agreement for the exchange of prisoners and the remains of soldiers. Yet, a date for a third round of discussions remains unconfirmed, with both sides still significantly divided over the terms of a ceasefire and a lasting peace settlement.
As the situation evolves, the Kremlin’s continued openness to dialogue suggests a complex interplay of diplomacy, national interests, and the pressing need for resolution in the ongoing conflict.
