Khairy Jamaluddin Attends UMNO Event, Sparking Return Speculations
Former Malaysian Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin attended a United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) event on November 7, 2023, raising speculation about his potential return to the party from which he was expelled two years ago. The event, held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, featured a forum titled “Reforming the Education System in the Age of AI and Empowering the Teaching Profession,” organized by the UMNO Youth wing.
During his appearance, Khairy received an enthusiastic welcome from attendees, with many standing and chanting “Hidup Khairy!” (“Long live Khairy!”) as he participated in the panel discussion. His presence sparked discussions about his future in UMNO, particularly as the party prepares for the upcoming Sabah state election on November 29.
In January 2023, Khairy was expelled from UMNO for alleged breaches of party discipline, specifically for openly criticizing the party’s leadership during the previous year’s general election campaign. Despite this, recent reports suggest that Khairy’s return could be imminent, especially after he met with UMNO President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at a recent wedding.
Khairy expressed gratitude to UMNO Youth for organizing the event and for their bravery in inviting him. When asked about his potential return to the party, he stated, “When the time comes, I will inform the media,” indicating that his re-entry may not be far off.
The UMNO Youth chief, Muhamad Akmal, invited Khairy with the party’s future in mind. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding potential disciplinary actions but emphasized the importance of unity within UMNO. “I’ve always said that there’s no point in fighting for too long. Let’s unite and come together… what matters most is that UMNO can move forward,” Akmal said.
Reports indicate that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has not yet discussed Khairy’s possible return with party officials. At the wedding ceremony where they met, Zahid acknowledged their encounter but declined to confirm reports that he had given Khairy his blessing to return. “What appeared in the media is news written by the media, and I respect that,” he stated, according to the news agency Bernama.
Since his expulsion, Khairy has maintained that he would not join any other political party, citing loyalty to UMNO. His presence at the recent event suggests a growing momentum for his possible re-entry into a party that has experienced significant changes since his departure.
The upcoming Sabah state election may serve as a pivotal moment for both Khairy and UMNO, as the party navigates its future direction and seeks to regain support among its base.
