Japan’s £52 Billion Chūō Expressway: A Scenic Route with a Tragic Past

The Chūō Expressway, a vital transportation route in Japan, stretches a remarkable 367 kilometers (approximately 228 miles) from Tokyo to Nagoya. This extensive motorway, which cost an estimated ¥11 trillion (£52 billion), not only serves as a major travel artery but also offers stunning views of Japan’s mountainous landscapes and iconic landmarks, including Mount Fuji.

The expressway traverses through several picturesque prefectures, namely Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Nagano, and Gifu. While many visitors to Japan may opt for the country’s renowned public transport systems, including bullet trains that reach speeds of up to 320 km/h, the Chūō Expressway presents a compelling alternative for those seeking a road trip experience. Scenic vistas of Lake Sagami and Lake Suwa enhance the journey, making driving through this region a memorable adventure.

As travelers navigate the four-lane expressway, they encounter not only breathtaking views but also important infrastructure. One notable feature is the Sasago Tunnel, located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Tokyo. This twin-bore tunnel, around three miles long, has a troubled history marked by a tragic accident in December 2021. During this incident, nine people lost their lives when parts of the tunnel’s roof collapsed, crushing vehicles traveling through. The disaster also sparked a fire, causing further chaos and devastation.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a memorial ceremony was held at the Sasago Tunnel in December 2022, attended by around 50 individuals, including bereaved families and officials from Nexco Central, the company responsible for managing the expressway. During the ceremony, Nexco Central President Tadashi Nawata offered heartfelt apologies to the victims’ families, expressing deep remorse for the incident that “took the peaceful lives” of those involved. Nawata pledged to improve safety measures along the expressway, acknowledging the ongoing challenges in ensuring the well-being of drivers and passengers.

Accessing the Chūō Expressway incurs a fee structure that includes a ¥150 (71 pence) entry fee, followed by an additional ¥25 (12 pence) charged for every kilometer traveled. This pricing model reflects the expressway’s extensive maintenance and operational costs, as well as its significance as a vital transportation link between major urban centers.

While the expressway is celebrated for its engineering achievements and scenic beauty, the memory of the tragic events at the Sasago Tunnel serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety in infrastructure development.
