Japan PM Takaichi Discusses China Relations with Trump
Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held a phone call with former President Donald Trump on November 25, 2023, focusing on the escalating tensions between Japan and China. This conversation marked their first direct communication since Takaichi’s controversial remarks regarding Taiwan, which ignited diplomatic tensions with Beijing.
Earlier this month, Takaichi stated during a parliamentary session that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could warrant a military response from Japan. This statement provoked a strong backlash from China, resulting in a travel boycott targeting Japan. Beijing maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory and has not dismissed the potential use of force to assert control over the island. Conversely, Taiwan’s government firmly rejects this claim, asserting that only the people of Taiwan can determine their own future.
In a related development, Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with Trump on the same day, emphasizing that Taiwan’s “return to China” is integral to Beijing’s vision of global order, according to the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua. Following his discussion with Xi, Trump highlighted progress in US-China trade negotiations but did not address the matter of Taiwan in his subsequent posts on social media platform Truth Social.
Takaichi provided a brief overview of her conversation with Trump to reporters, stating, “President Trump gave a brief explanation of the recent state of US-China relations.” She did not delve into specifics but added, “President Trump mentioned that he and I are extremely good friends, and that he would be delighted to receive a call from me at any time.” The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment on this exchange.
Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai reiterated on the same day that for the island’s approximately 23 million residents, a “return” to China is not a viable option. Meanwhile, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara addressed the importance of stable US-China relations during a regular news conference, stating, “The stability of US-China relations is extremely important for the international community, including Japan.” Kihara refrained from commenting on Xi’s reported remarks regarding Taiwan.
The diplomatic discourse surrounding Taiwan continues to be a critical point of contention in international relations, illustrating the complex dynamics involving Japan, China, and the United States. As these discussions unfold, the implications for regional stability and international policy remain significant.
