Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was recorded on a live microphone asking US President Donald Trump for a meeting with Trump’s son, Eric Trump, following a Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on October 13, 2023. The interaction, which took place after Trump’s remarks at the peace summit, was captured on video and audio without the two leaders realizing that the microphone remained on.

During the exchange, President Subianto spoke to Trump from behind a podium, referencing a region that was “not safe, security-wise.” He then inquired, “Can I meet Eric?” Trump responded affirmatively, saying, “I’ll have Eric call. Should I do that? He’s such a good boy. I’ll have Eric call.” Subianto suggested they “look for a better place,” prompting Trump to reiterate, “I’ll have Eric call you.” The Indonesian leader added, “Eric or Don Jr.,” indicating interest in meeting either of Trump’s sons.

This incident raises questions about potential business ties between Indonesian officials and the Trump family. Both Eric Trump and his brother Donald Trump Jr. serve as executive vice presidents of the Trump Organization, a firm involved in real estate, hospitality, and blockchain ventures. Notably, the organization’s website features a golf club located outside Jakarta, Indonesia, along with a forthcoming Trump-branded property in Bali.

While the exchange has drawn attention, both the White House and the Indonesian Embassy in Washington have not commented on the interaction. The conversation did not clarify whether it pertained to any specific business dealings involving the Trump Organization or the president’s family.

The unexpected nature of the “hot mic” moment underscores the informal interactions that can occur between global leaders in high-stakes settings. As diplomatic relations continue to evolve, the implications of such exchanges, especially regarding potential business interests, remain to be seen.
