Indonesia Secures Contract for 48 KAAN Fighter Jets from Türkiye
Indonesia has signed a significant contract with Türkiye to acquire 48 KAAN fighter jets, marking a crucial step in the nation’s efforts to modernise its military capabilities. The announcement was made by the Indonesian Defence Ministry on July 29, 2023, during the International Defence Industry Fair held in Istanbul. This latest procurement is part of Indonesia’s strategy to enhance its air force and replace ageing military hardware.
In addition to the KAAN jets, Indonesia has previously made substantial investments in its defence sector. In 2022, the country ordered 42 French Rafale jets for approximately USD 8.1 billion. As part of its ongoing military expansion, Jakarta is also exploring the possibility of acquiring China’s J-10 fighter jets and is engaged in discussions regarding the purchase of US-made F-15EX jets.
The contract was formalised on the sidelines of the defence fair, attended by Indonesia’s Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeedin, who witnessed the signing. According to defence ministry spokesperson Frega Wenas Inkriwang, the agreement signifies a commitment from both governments to strengthen joint technology development and enhance Indonesia’s defence industry capacity.
Details regarding the contract’s financial terms and the timeline for delivery have not been disclosed. The KAAN fighter jet, described as Türkiye’s first national combat aircraft, completed its inaugural flight in February 2022. However, mass production is not anticipated to commence until 2028. The Turkish Defence Ministry has characterised the KAAN as a fifth-generation aircraft, powered by two General Electric F-110 engines, which are also used in the fourth-generation Lockheed Martin F-16 jets.
In a further commitment to defence collaboration, Indonesia has also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Türkiye’s TAIS Shipyard for the procurement of two Milgem Istif class frigates. This agreement was announced by Minister Sjamsoeedin via a social media post on Monday. The Indonesian Defence Ministry has yet to provide additional details regarding the frigate deal.
This series of agreements highlights Indonesia’s proactive approach to enhancing its defence capabilities amid regional security dynamics. By diversifying its procurement sources and investing in advanced military technology, Indonesia aims to strengthen its air and naval forces for future challenges.
