Gaza Hospital Receives 15 Bodies Under Ceasefire Agreement
Gaza’s Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Yunis announced on November 5 that it had received the bodies of 15 Palestinian prisoners as part of a ceasefire exchange agreement facilitated by the United States. The hospital confirmed in a statement that this was the “tenth batch of the bodies of Palestinian martyrs,” bringing the total received under the agreement to 285 bodies.
The exchange follows the return of an Israeli-American soldier, Itay Chen, whose remains were handed back from Gaza on November 4. According to the terms of the ceasefire agreement, which has been in effect since October 10, Israel is set to return 15 bodies of Palestinians for every Israeli hostage body it receives.
Initially, at the start of the ceasefire, Hamas was reported to hold 48 hostages in Gaza, comprising 20 alive and 28 deceased. Since then, the militant group has released all surviving captives and 21 of the deceased’s remains.
Israel has voiced accusations against Hamas for delaying the return of the bodies of deceased hostages. In contrast, Hamas maintains that the slow process is due to many bodies being buried beneath the rubble in Gaza. The group has called for assistance from mediators and the Red Cross to provide necessary equipment and personnel to help recover the bodies.
The ongoing exchange highlights the complexities of humanitarian negotiations in the region. The ceasefire agreement aims to facilitate the return of captives and their remains while addressing the humanitarian needs of those affected by the conflict.
As the situation continues to evolve, the impact on families and communities grappling with loss remains profound. The exchange serves as a reminder of the human cost of conflict and the urgent need for continued dialogue and resolution.
