Former Military Advocate General Arrested Over Abuse Video
Israeli police arrested former military advocate general Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi on November 3, 2024, following the fallout from a leaked video that allegedly shows soldiers abusing a Palestinian detainee. The arrest, confirmed by Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, has reignited discussions surrounding military conduct and accountability.
Tomer-Yerushalmi’s resignation on November 2 triggered speculation about her well-being, with reports suggesting she had gone missing for several hours. Some media outlets speculated about a potential suicide attempt, although police later indicated that her disappearance might have been an effort to dispose of her phone, which could contain sensitive information. Tomer-Yerushalmi reportedly left a letter that some interpreted as a suicide note.
On November 1, Channel 12 published a copy of her resignation letter, which acknowledged that her office had released the controversial video to the public in 2023. The footage, which surfaced in August 2024, reportedly depicted soldiers at the Sde Teiman military base engaging in violent acts against a Palestinian detainee.
Details of the Abuse and Legal Proceedings
The video has drawn widespread condemnation and triggered protests in Israel and abroad. Following its airing, five reservists were formally charged with serious offenses, including the use of a “sharp object” to stab the detainee near the rectum. According to statements from the Israeli military, the abuse led to significant injuries, including cracked ribs and a punctured lung.
The violence reportedly occurred on July 5, 2024, during a search of the detainee, who was blindfolded and handcuffed. Evidence gathered during the investigation includes surveillance footage and medical reports, which corroborate the detainee’s claims of mistreatment.
The United Nations has also weighed in, with a commission finding that thousands of detainees experienced “widespread and systematic abuse” in Israeli military facilities, classifying these actions as potential war crimes. Israel has vehemently denied these accusations, labeling them as “outrageous” and asserting its commitment to international legal standards.
Government Response and Investigation
In response to the incident, Minister Ben Gvir emphasized the need for a thorough and professional investigation, stating that the prison service would enhance vigilance regarding detainee safety following Tomer-Yerushalmi’s arrest. His statements reflect the government’s attempt to manage public perception and maintain the legitimacy of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
As the case unfolds, a Tel Aviv court has ordered Tomer-Yerushalmi to remain in custody until noon on November 6, 2024. She faces allegations of fraud, breach of trust, abuse of office, obstruction of justice, and the unauthorized disclosure of information by a public servant. Alongside her, another member of the military prosecution is also implicated in the ongoing investigation.
The public response to the leaked video and subsequent legal actions illustrates the deepening scrutiny of military practices in Israel, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict and tensions in the region since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. The incident has not only affected the reputation of the IDF but also raised significant concerns regarding the treatment of detainees and the accountability of military personnel.
