A tragic incident occurred on August 6, 2024, when a suspension bridge collapsed in the scenic Xiata Scenic Area in Zhaosu, located in China’s Xinjiang region. The mishap resulted in the deaths of five individuals, while at least 24 others sustained injuries, with two reported in serious condition. The accident unfolded around 18:00 local time when a cable supporting the bridge snapped, causing the structure to tilt sharply and leading to 29 people falling from the bridge, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The popular tourist destination, known for its breathtaking natural scenery, was crowded at the time of the incident. Video footage circulating on the Chinese short-video platform Douyin depicted the aftermath, showing the bridge tilted precariously to one side. Stranded tourists were seen clinging to the remaining suspended section, seeking to cross to safety amid the chaos.

Yun Shang, a tour guide present during the accident, shared his experience on Douyin, noting that a member of his group—a naval soldier—immediately assisted the injured. “We also urge all tourists to pay attention to personal safety while travelling and abide by the rules,” Yun emphasized. His group actively participated in the rescue efforts, demonstrating a spirit of solidarity during the crisis.

Local news outlet Jiemian News identified the bridge involved in the accident as the Jiangjun Bridge. This bridge had previously experienced a similar incident in 2024 when a cable failed but thankfully resulted in no injuries. Following the recent collapse, local officials have temporarily closed the Xiata Scenic Area as they conduct safety inspections and investigate the causes of the accident. The timeline for reopening the area has yet to be determined.

Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. The community has expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased and hopes for a speedy recovery for those injured. The incident has raised concerns about safety regulations at tourist sites, prompting calls for stricter enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
