Explore the Filming Locations of Alice in Borderland Season 3

The much-anticipated third season of Alice in Borderland is set to premiere on September 25, 2023, after a three-year hiatus. This popular Japanese thriller, available on Netflix, stars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya as Ryōhei Arisu and Yuzuha Usagi, respectively. Following a dramatic cliffhanger at the end of the second season, viewers are eager to see what challenges await the characters in this dystopian version of Tokyo.
As fans prepare for the new season, many are curious about the filming locations that bring the series to life. While specific locations for the third season remain under wraps to avoid spoilers, it is expected that the show will continue to explore familiar settings within Tokyo. Trailers suggest that the narrative unfolds in the same parallel version of the city, maintaining the atmosphere that captivated audiences in previous episodes.
Much of the series was filmed in the bustling capital, particularly in the Dōgenzaka district of Shibuya. However, capturing the essence of one of the world’s most populous cities posed challenges for the production team. To recreate iconic locations like the Shibuya Crossing, the team utilized a combination of sets and advanced visual effects. The primary filming location was the Ashikaga Scramble City Studio in Tochigi, located in the Kantō region of Honshu. Most scenes were enhanced with computer-generated imagery (CGI), with only essential elements like the road and ticket gates constructed on-site.
In addition to Tokyo, several scenes were filmed in notable locations across Japan. One significant site is the Sakuya Konohana Kan, a vast greenhouse situated in Osaka’s Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park. This unique venue provided a stunning backdrop for pivotal moments in the series. The “Beach,” a luxurious hotel where survivors regroup between games, was portrayed using the Royal Oak Hotel Spa and Gardens in Otsu, Shiga. While exterior shots were filmed there, key interior scenes, including the main hall, took place at the Nanki Shirahama Resort Hotel. This resort remains open for fans wishing to experience a night at one of the filming locations, located in the picturesque beach town of Shirahama in the Wakayama Prefecture.
Unfortunately, the Royal Oak Hotel has reportedly closed its doors after declaring bankruptcy, marking the end of an era for this filming location. Another must-see landmark for devoted fans is the Rainbow Bridge, a striking 798-meter-long structure in Tokyo Bay, which features prominently in various scenes throughout the series.
One of the most thrilling sequences from Alice in Borderland occurs during a game of tag, known as the “Five of Spades.” This intense scene was shot in a deserted apartment building located at 4-2 Koeidai, Kita-ku, in Kobe, the capital of the Hyogo Prefecture in the Kansai region. The building was vacant during filming in 2019 as it awaited refurbishment, but it has since been occupied by new residents.
With the third season of Alice in Borderland set to launch, fans have a unique opportunity to explore some of the unforgettable landmarks that have graced the series. As the excitement builds for the new season, viewers can look forward to thrilling new challenges, character developments, and familiar sights that bring this gripping story to life.
