EU Condemns Iran’s Violent Response to Protests, Calls for Internet Restoration
The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, condemned the Iranian authorities’ “heavy-handed” response to ongoing protests during a statement made on January 9, 2024. Kallas emphasized the need for the Iranian government to restore internet access as demonstrators continue to express their dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living and government policies.
Protests erupted across Iran nearly two weeks ago, marking some of the largest demonstrations the country has seen in recent years. In response, authorities have intensified their crackdown, leading to a total internet blackout that has lasted for over 12 hours, according to the internet monitoring organization Netblocks. Kallas highlighted the government’s actions, stating that “by ignoring their rightful demands, the regime shows its true colours.”
Images emerging from Tehran depict a disproportionate and violent response from security forces against peaceful demonstrators. Kallas declared that “any violence against peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable,” urging Iranian officials to respect the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
In contrast, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, reaffirmed on the same day that the authorities would “not back down” in the face of these protests, indicating a firm stance against the demonstrators. The government’s refusal to yield to public pressure underscores the regime’s fear of its citizens’ demands for change.
The EU has called upon Iranian authorities to uphold democratic principles and restore access to the internet for all citizens. The ongoing conflict between the government and its people reflects a broader struggle for rights and freedoms within the Islamic republic.
As the situation develops, the international community is closely monitoring the events in Iran, with the EU’s condemnation serving as a significant statement against the violence faced by the Iranian people.
