Egypt Secures US$1.8 Billion in Renewable Energy Agreements
Egypt has finalized renewable energy agreements valued at a total of US$1.8 billion, as reported by state television on January 11, 2024. These agreements include contracts with the Norwegian renewable energy company Scatec and China’s Sungrow. The Egyptian government aims to have renewable energy contribute to 42 percent of its electricity generation mix by 2030. However, officials have indicated that achieving this target will require increased international support.
Key Projects and Partnerships
Among the notable projects is a solar energy plant to be constructed by Scatec in Minya, located in Upper Egypt. This facility is expected to have a generation capacity of 1.7 gigawatts and will be accompanied by energy storage stations with a total capacity of 4 gigawatt hours. An official statement from the Egyptian cabinet highlighted the significance of this project in bolstering the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.
In addition to the solar plant, the agreements include plans for a manufacturing facility by Sungrow within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. This factory will produce energy storage batteries, with a portion of its output designated for the aforementioned solar energy project. This strategic partnership aims to enhance Egypt’s capability in renewable energy production and storage.
Power Purchase Agreements and Capacity Goals
The renewable energy deals also encompass power purchase agreements that have been established to ensure the effective implementation of the projects. Scatec has signed a deal for a total capacity of 1.95 gigawatts along with 3.9 gigawatt hours of battery storage systems. According to a statement from Scatec, these agreements are vital for the integration of renewable energy into Egypt’s power grid.
With these substantial investments, Egypt is positioning itself as a key player in the renewable energy sector. The government’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy capacity reflects a broader trend towards sustainability and environmental responsibility, aiming for a greener future not only for Egypt but also for the region.
