Denmark’s PM Urges Europe to Strengthen Defence Immediately
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized the urgent need for Europe to bolster its military defenses during a speech in Paris on January 28, 2024. She stated that the continent must reduce its reliance on the United States for security in light of shifting geopolitical dynamics. Frederiksen’s remarks come amidst concerns over the stability of Europe’s alliance with the US, particularly following controversial statements made by former President Donald Trump regarding Greenland.
Speaking at Sciences Po University, Frederiksen acknowledged the challenges Europe faces in establishing a self-sufficient defense capability. She responded to comments made by NATO chief Mark Rutte, who recently told EU lawmakers that it would be unrealistic to expect Europe to defend itself without American support. Frederiksen admitted that the current state of European defense readiness is “extremely difficult,” citing dependencies on US intelligence and nuclear capabilities.
Calls for Immediate Action on Defence Spending
Frederiksen criticized the timeline proposed for increasing defense spending, suggesting that a goal of 2035 would be insufficient. “I’m sorry to say it would be too late,” she remarked. Instead, she stressed that “rearming ourselves now is the most important thing.” Last year, NATO members committed to raising defense expenditures to 5 percent of their economic output, following a previous target of 2 percent by 2024, largely under pressure from the US government.
Reflecting on the past, Frederiksen declared that Europe had made a “big mistake” by significantly cutting military budgets. This historical context underscores her argument for urgent action to enhance European military capabilities.
Later in the day, Frederiksen was scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron alongside Greenland’s premier. This meeting is expected to further address collaborative efforts to strengthen European defense strategies and reduce reliance on external powers.
As Europe grapples with its defense strategy in a rapidly changing global landscape, the conversation initiated by Frederiksen highlights the pressing need for immediate and decisive action to ensure security and stability across the region.
