Dalian Beach Welcomes 30,000 Daily Visitors Amid Summer Heat
Dalian Beach, located in northeast China’s Liaoning province, has become one of the world’s most crowded beaches, attracting up to 30,000 visitors daily during peak season. This 500-metre stretch of sand faces severe overcrowding, especially from May to August, making it challenging for beachgoers to find space for towels or umbrellas.
The beach’s immense popularity can be attributed to its convenient transport links with nearby towns, providing a quick escape from the scorching 40C summer temperatures. Weekend reports indicate that the number of visitors can swell dramatically, with local sources stating that the beach received as many as 60,000 visitors on busy weekends last summer, a significant increase from the usual 20,000 on an average day.
Challenges of Overcrowding
As visitors flock to Dalian Beach, the influx presents logistical challenges, particularly for cleaning crews. Reports indicate that beachgoers generate approximately 20 tonnes of rubbish daily, highlighting the environmental impact of such high foot traffic. The local community is grappling with maintaining cleanliness while accommodating the growing number of tourists.
Despite its limited size, Dalian Beach has captured the attention of many Chinese locals, although it remains less popular among European tourists. Photographs from recent summers showcase a vibrant scene filled with umbrellas and people seeking relief in the water, often lounging on inflatable lilos and rings.
Visitors have taken to platforms like TripAdvisor to share their experiences, with some commenting on the beach’s small size. One reviewer remarked, “The beach is really really small. I was there early morning in early May, so there weren’t too many people, but I can imagine that it is super packed later in the day and summer. Easy to get to via bus.” Another visitor compared the beach to “more Brighton beach than Miami,” describing the packed rows of beach shelters and the cleanliness of the water.
Attractions Beyond the Sand
Beyond its sandy shores, Dalian Beach features a park area adorned with interesting sculptures, including a giant seashell that serves as a popular photo spot. Two kiosks, one humorously named “No tea no fun,” offer beachwear, sand buckets, shovels, and inflatable toys, catering to the needs of eager beachgoers.
As summer approaches, Dalian Beach’s appeal shows no signs of waning. Its unique combination of beauty, accessibility, and vibrant atmosphere continues to draw thousands, making it a noteworthy destination in China’s summer tourism landscape.
