Anutin Charnvirakul Elected Thailand’s Prime Minister Amid Political Turmoil
Thailand’s parliament elected Anutin Charnvirakul as the new prime minister on September 5, 2023. Charnvirakul secured a majority of votes, defeating Chaikasem Nitisiri of the Pheu Thai Party in a pivotal parliamentary face-off. This marks the first election for prime minister since 2019, with Charnvirakul receiving support from 146 lawmakers of his own Bhumjaithai Party and its allies, while Pheu Thai claimed 143 votes would back him.
Charnvirakul, 58, previously served in several key government roles, including as deputy prime minister and health minister. He is widely recognized for his commitment to legalizing cannabis in 2022, a policy now being regulated more strictly for medical use. His leadership comes at a crucial time for Thailand, which relies heavily on tourism and is still navigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The election was complicated by the recent political landscape, particularly the fallout from former prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra‘s brief term. On August 29, Thailand’s Constitutional Court dismissed her from office, citing breaches of ministerial ethics. Charnvirakul had previously supported her coalition but distanced himself after her handling of a border issue with Cambodia.
The lead-up to the election was further influenced by a sudden trip to Dubai by Thaksin Shinawatra, the polarizing figure at the center of Thailand’s political turmoil. Thaksin left Thailand late on September 4 for a medical check-up in Singapore but diverted to Dubai due to an airport closure. He stated on social media that he would visit friends and meet with doctors while in Dubai, adding uncertainty to the already volatile political atmosphere.
Charnvirakul’s election reflects a shift in Thailand’s political alliances, as he has now emerged as a significant player following the upheaval surrounding his predecessors. His government will face immediate challenges, including economic recovery and public health management, as the nation continues to recover from the pandemic’s impacts.
As Thailand navigates these changes, the political landscape remains dynamic and unpredictable. The implications of Charnvirakul’s leadership will unfold in the coming weeks, with many observing how he addresses the pressing issues facing the country.
