Air India Faces Potential A350 Route Disruptions After Engine Damage
Air India has issued a warning regarding potential disruptions to its Airbus A350 routes following engine damage sustained by one of its long-haul aircraft. The incident occurred on January 15, 2024, when the aircraft encountered “a foreign object” while taxiing in dense fog at New Delhi. This situation poses a risk for the airline, which operates six A350s on key international routes, including those to London, New York, and Newark.
The airline did not provide specific details about the foreign object that caused the damage or the particular routes that may be affected. In a statement, Air India confirmed that the aircraft is currently grounded for a thorough investigation and necessary repairs. These measures could lead to disruptions on select A350 routes, particularly during a busy travel period.
The damaged aircraft had been en route to New York but was forced to return to New Delhi after Iran temporarily closed its airspace. This closure was implemented as a precaution due to rising tensions between the United States and Iran, prompting some airlines to cancel, reroute, or delay flights. Fortunately, Iran has since reopened its airspace after a near five-hour closure.
Air India’s A350s are integral to its operations on several lucrative international routes. The airline’s reliance on these aircraft means that any unexpected grounding can significantly impact service levels and customer satisfaction.
As the investigation into the incident proceeds, Air India is expected to keep passengers informed about any changes to their travel plans. Travelers using the airline are encouraged to check for updates regarding their flights to avoid any inconvenience.
