Travis Head Backs Jake Weatherald Amid Challenging Ashes Start

Australia’s opening batter, Travis Head, has publicly supported Jake Weatherald as his opening partner despite Weatherald’s difficult start in Test cricket during the ongoing Ashes series. Following lackluster performances, including scores of 10 and five in the recent Boxing Day Test, Weatherald’s batting average has dipped to just below 21 since his debut. The fourth Test was held in Melbourne, where Australia faced a four-wicket defeat to England.

Head acknowledged the challenges facing Weatherald, stating, “He showed a lot of glimpses over his first four tests, and it’s not always going to go your way.” He emphasized the need for patience, indicating that many renowned players have also struggled early in their international careers. “I think he’s a good enough player to play international cricket,” Head asserted.

Weatherald’s struggles are not unique within the Australian squad, as Cameron Green also faces scrutiny regarding his place in the team. The 26-year-old all-rounder, who has played 36 Tests, has had a disappointing series, failing to reach 20 runs in his last four innings. Green, once considered a potential long-term number three for Australia, was demoted to the number seven position for the Boxing Day Test.

The selectors opted for Green over Beau Webster, who possesses better batting and bowling averages from his seven Tests. In the current Ashes series, Green has taken only three wickets, averaging 52.66 runs per wicket, a stark contrast to England’s captain Ben Stokes, who has claimed 13 wickets with an average of 21.69.

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor commented on Green’s situation during a radio interview, noting that the all-rounder appears to have lost confidence. “In this game, you’ve got to keep performing, that’s the bottom line,” Taylor stated. “At the moment, this hasn’t been a great series for him so far.”

As the Ashes series progresses, Australia leads 3-1, with the fifth and final Test scheduled to commence in Sydney on January 4, 2024. The upcoming match offers both Weatherald and Green an opportunity to reclaim their form and solidify their places in the Australian lineup.
