Taipei and Taoyuan Honor Hero Who Died in Metro Attack
A tragic incident in Taipei last week resulted in the death of a 57-year-old man, Yu Chia-chang, who attempted to thwart a knife-wielding attacker. The Taipei and Taoyuan city governments announced plans to honor Yu at the Taoyuan Martyrs’ Shrine, recognizing his bravery during the assault that unfolded on Friday evening.
The attacker, identified as Chang Wen, 27, initiated a violent spree at Taipei Main Station and near MRT Zhongshan Station, employing smoke grenades and a knife. This rampage tragically claimed the lives of four individuals, including Chang, and left at least 11 others injured.
Yu’s Courage Recognized by Officials
Yu Chia-chang, a resident of Taoyuan, was fatally injured while trying to stop Chang’s attack at Exit M7 of Taipei Main Station. In response to this heroism, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an stated that the city would posthumously commend Yu and assist his family in applying for a citation from the central government. Mayor Chiang emphasized that compensation for the victims would be sourced from various channels, including insurance payouts and crime victim protection funds.
In the aftermath of the attack, a makeshift memorial has formed near Exit M7 and outside the Eslite Spectrum Nanxi department store. Mourners have left flowers and handwritten notes, some expressing gratitude for Yu’s actions. One high school student wrote that Yu instilled “a gentle sense of protection” on a route regularly traveled by students.
Community Remembers a Caring Family Man
Friends and family describe Yu as a warm, charismatic individual who commuted daily between Taoyuan and Taipei. He was known for his willingness to help others. One friend reflected on social media, stating that Yu sacrificed his life to protect others and urged the community to remember his bravery.
Yu is survived by his wife and two daughters, according to Chen Pao-min, Director of the Taoyuan Department of Social Welfare. His death has deeply affected the community, with many expressing sorrow over the loss of such a dedicated individual.
Among the other victims of the attack was a 37-year-old employee of Mega International Commercial Bank, who was fatally assaulted by Chang while he was on the fourth floor of the department store. The bank released a statement expressing profound sadness over the loss of their colleague and offered assistance to his family with funeral arrangements and financial matters.
Another victim, also aged 37, was a security guard who encountered Chang while riding his motorcycle to work. Initially unaware of the unfolding violence, he kindly allowed Chang to pass. When their eyes met, the attacker turned on him without warning, resulting in his tragic death.
The brutal events in Taipei have sparked conversations about public safety and the role of bystanders in violent situations. The community continues to mourn the lives lost and to honor the memory of those who acted bravely in the face of danger.
