Swiss Authorities Investigate Bar Managers After Deadly New Year Fire

Swiss authorities have initiated a criminal investigation into the managers of a bar in Crans-Montana following a devastating fire that claimed the lives of 40 individuals on New Year’s Eve. The blaze erupted at approximately 1:30 AM on January 1, 2024, as the bar was filled with young celebrants welcoming the new year. The tragic incident also left 119 people injured, many of whom sustained serious injuries.

The bar, known as Le Constellation, was owned and managed by French couple Jacques and Jessica Moretti. In a statement released by the police and the public prosecutor’s office in the southwestern Swiss canton of Wallis, it was confirmed that a criminal investigation was launched against the Morettis. They face charges of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities have emphasized that the presumption of innocence applies until a final conviction is reached. Questions about compliance with safety standards have arisen in the aftermath of the fire. Jacques Moretti asserted to Swiss media that all safety regulations were adhered to at the establishment, which reportedly had a capacity of 300 patrons plus an additional 40 on its terrace, according to the Crans-Montana official website.

Investigation Focuses on Safety and Fire Causes

Chief Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud indicated that the investigation would scrutinize whether safety protocols were adequately followed. She stated that the prevailing theory suggests the fire may have been ignited by “sparklers or Bengal candles attached to champagne bottles and lifted too close to the ceiling.”

Social media videos released during the chaos captured the scene as the low wooden ceiling, which was covered with soundproofing foam, quickly caught fire. Revelers continued to dance, seemingly unaware of the impending danger. Witnesses reported that the event space where the fire originated, located in the basement, was accessed via a narrow staircase connecting it to the ground floor.

The tragedy has raised significant concerns about fire safety regulations in public venues, particularly those that host large gatherings. As investigations continue, the community is left grappling with the impact of the loss and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future incidents.
