Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, will represent the nation at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from September 22 to September 27, 2023. He is scheduled to deliver Singapore’s national statement during the UNGA general debate on September 27, according to a release from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
This year’s UNGA theme is “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.” The debates will commence on September 26, providing a platform for leaders to address global challenges. Minister Balakrishnan will also participate in the second G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where he will present a statement on behalf of the Global Governance Group (3G).
Key Events and Engagements
During his visit, Minister Balakrishnan will host several significant high-level events. These include the 3G Ministerial Meeting, a lunch for heads of delegation from Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and a reception for the Forum of Small States. He will co-chair the 8th ASEAN-Pacific Alliance Ministerial Meeting alongside Colombia, further emphasizing Singapore’s commitment to regional cooperation.
In addition, Minister Balakrishnan will represent Singapore at the Alliance of Small Island States Leaders’ Meeting and deliver a statement at the UN Security Council’s High-Level Open Debate on Artificial Intelligence and International Peace and Security. His engagements reflect Singapore’s proactive approach to international diplomacy and governance.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Gan Siow Huang, will also participate in various UN events. She will represent Singapore at the High-Level Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution. Ms. Gan will also attend the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and South China Sea SIDS Ministerial Meeting, demonstrating Singapore’s involvement in pressing regional issues.
Bilateral Meetings and Future Goals
The MFA noted that both ministers will engage in a series of bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts and US officials based in New York. These discussions aim to strengthen diplomatic ties and explore collaborative opportunities. In addition to their scheduled events, they will participate in key UN gatherings, including the High-Level Special Event on Climate Action and the High-Level Meeting commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.
This participation marks a critical moment for Singapore as it seeks to assert its voice on the global stage, addressing issues that resonate with both national and international interests.
