A second batch of 42 M1A2T Abrams tanks arrived in Taiwan from the United States on Sunday. The tanks were transported to the army’s Armored Training Command located in Hukou Township, Hsinchu, early on Monday morning. This delivery is part of Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military capabilities.

At approximately 12:10 a.m. on Monday, the tanks, which were covered with black, waterproof tarps, were seen leaving the Port of Taipei. They were moved on large civilian flatbed trailers, accompanied by police and military vehicles providing an escort along the West Coast Expressway. Traffic controls were implemented to ensure a safe and efficient transfer to the training base.

The shipment’s arrival was initially scheduled for Saturday night but was delayed due to adverse weather conditions related to a typhoon. Taiwan’s army currently operates about 1,000 tanks, including older models such as the CM-11 Brave Tiger and M60A3, both of which have been in service for over two decades.

In an effort to modernize its arsenal, the Taiwanese military has allocated NT$40.52 billion (approximately US$1.37 billion) from 2019 to 2027 for the procurement of 108 M1A2T tanks. These tanks are set to be deployed with the army’s Sixth Corps, significantly bolstering defenses in northern Taiwan.

The first batch of 38 M1A2T tanks arrived in December 2022 and participated in their inaugural live-fire exercise on July 10, 2023, at the Kengzikou Range in Hsinchu County. During this exercise, four tanks successfully fired a total of 19 rounds using their 120mm cannons, achieving a perfect hit rate on targets designed to resemble Chinese tanks, thanks to the advanced Hunter-Killer system.

This latest delivery underscores Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening its military infrastructure in response to regional security challenges. The modernization of its armored capabilities is seen as a crucial step in ensuring its defense readiness in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
