Philip Colbert Launches Lobster Beach Art Installation in Singapore
International artist Philip Colbert has unveiled his latest project, Lobster Beach, at Tanjong Beach in Sentosa, Singapore. Dubbed “the largest artist takeover in Singapore,” this installation features a series of lobster-themed art pieces, including an 8-metre-tall steel sculpture called Lobster Ice Cream. The project aims to engage visitors with its whimsical designs and vibrant colors, making a significant impact on the local art scene.
In addition to the towering Lobster Ice Cream, beachgoers can interact with three giant inflatables, each standing at 5 metres tall. These include the Lobster Shark, Lobster Octopus, and Lobster Fish, all inspired by marine life. The installations will remain in Singapore for an extended period of six years, providing an ongoing attraction for both locals and tourists.
Colbert, who previously showcased his work in Singapore with the exhibition titled Journey To The Lobster Planet in 2024, expressed his enthusiasm about this new venture. In an interview with CNA Lifestyle, he revealed that the opportunity arose when the Singapore government recognized his artistic vision and suggested creating a more permanent installation in Sentosa.
“I loved the idea of having something more permanent in the city to build on the awareness of the previous projects, so I was excited by the idea,” Colbert stated. He emphasized that the beach setting was ideal for a giant lobster sculpture, noting the symbolic connection of ice cream to a fun, beach-going experience.
Colbert also highlighted the significance of creating lasting art. “Sometimes exhibitions can feel very temporal and fleeting, so a permanent sculpture can live in a wider sense of time and really connect to a local population,” he remarked. He hopes that Lobster Beach will provide a sense of “empowering fun and surrealism to the city,” encouraging residents and visitors alike to engage with the art in a meaningful way.
As the installation draws attention, it marks a pivotal moment in Singapore’s contemporary art landscape, blending playful aesthetics with a deeper message about community connection and creativity. With its unique offerings, Lobster Beach is poised to become a beloved feature of Sentosa, inviting exploration and enjoyment for years to come.
