A vessel caught fire off the coast of Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province on July 20, prompting passengers to jump into the sea in a desperate attempt to escape. The incident involved the ferry KM Barcelona 5, which was carrying approximately 280 passengers and was en route to Manado Port when the fire broke out in the afternoon near Talise Island.

According to Jerry Harmonsina, secretary of the North Sulawesi Regional Disaster Management Agency, initial reports confirmed the location of the fire. While there are no confirmed reports of casualties, the rescue operation is ongoing. Harmonsina stated, “The evacuation is currently underway, involving various units from the Navy, the National Search and Rescue Agency, the Coast Guard, as well as assistance from local fishermen in the surrounding area.”

Dramatic footage of the incident circulated widely on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, showcasing the chaotic scene as passengers were seen jumping into the water. Some videos appeared to be filmed by those who had already jumped overboard, capturing thick plumes of black smoke rising from the vessel. In one clip posted by user Soalunsrat, individuals were observed hastily donning life vests, while others appeared to be in distress, frantically using their mobile phones to call for help.

Local fishermen have joined the search and rescue efforts, working alongside formal rescue units to locate and assist those who may still be in the water. The community response highlights the collaboration between local resources and official agencies during emergencies.

As the situation continues to unfold, the authorities are focusing on ensuring the safety of all passengers involved. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by maritime travelers and the importance of effective emergency response protocols. Further updates are expected as rescue operations progress and investigations into the cause of the fire begin.
