National Shooter Guy Hoh Dies at 51 After Cancer Battle

Guy Hoh, a prominent national shooter from Singapore, passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 51 after a prolonged battle with cancer. His fiancée, Chew Hui Min, confirmed the news on Sunday, revealing that Mr. Hoh had been undergoing treatment for appendix cancer at the time of his death. Prior to this diagnosis, he had successfully fought two earlier episodes of leukaemia.
Mr. Hoh was first diagnosed with leukaemia in his mid-thirties and faced a relapse in 2014. He overcame both challenges but was later diagnosed with appendix cancer in February 2023 after experiencing a burst appendix. Despite the difficult prognosis, he continued to train for the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Bangkok, demonstrating remarkable resilience throughout his illness.
Legacy in Competitive Shooting
As one of five national athletes shortlisted for the men’s compak sporting team event at the SEA Games, Mr. Hoh’s dedication to the sport was evident. The Singapore National Olympic Council announced the list in early August, with three shooters ultimately selected to represent Singapore. Compak sporting, a shotgun discipline involving clay pigeon shooting, has been a significant part of Mr. Hoh’s life.
His contributions to shooting sports in Singapore spanned decades. He began coaching in 1994 and established a business that positions itself as Southeast Asia’s only hunting agency, providing guided hunts and safari management in Africa and other locations. Mr. Hoh also competed in the 2003 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Perth, finishing 49th out of 52 shooters in the Trap Men event.
Community Remembers a Mentor
The firearms training group Guerrillas Tactical, which Mr. Hoh co-founded, expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt Facebook post. They acknowledged his instrumental role in the industry and described him as a “great mentor” and a sincere friend who made a lasting impact on those around him. “He left behind many accomplishments for the firearms industry,” the group stated, highlighting his influence and dedication.
As the Singapore Shooting Association works to confirm Mr. Hoh’s final selection for the SEA Games team, the shooting community mourns the loss of a passionate athlete and coach. His legacy in competitive shooting and the lives he touched through mentorship will be remembered by many.
